In Preparation for Yosemite...

This Thursday, February 2: 7th & 8th graders will hike through Lincoln Park along the coast towards Land’s End, past the Cliff House to Ocean Beach. After a break for lunch and some fun, they will hike back and arrive at school by 3:00. Students should bring a hearty lunch, a water bottle and good walking shoes. This is the perfect time to break in any new shoes (and raingear) that were purchased.

Next Thursday, February 9: The 7th and 8th grade classes will have a chance to perfect their ice skating moves at Yerba Buena rink on Thursday, February 9. They will be gone from 10:30 to 3pm, so please make sure your child brings a hearty lunch, a water bottle and good walking shoes.

Summer School 2012 is now Scheduled

We believe that summer is a great opportunity to engage children in activities that enrich their academic foundation and keep them involved and interested in learning. Therefore, we will offer one six-week academic session this summer. The dates are June 18 to July 27. Brochures and registration will be available in February. We hope you will be able to use this program, as it is a worthwhile experience for any child. Also, we appreciate you letting your friends know of this program since it is open to students in any school.

February 11, 2012 - World Happy Day - http://worldhappyday.com/

Happy People = Happy World

World HAPPY Day inspires action for increasing happiness in our own lives and in the world. A growing body of research shows that happy people are healthier and live longer. They are more likely to care for the environment and less likely to commit crimes or go to war. Happy people help others more often... and are more likely to find creative solutions. Increasing happiness benefits us as individuals and communities in infinite ways and is a goal worth sharing. Join this worldwide event. Use the link above and see where the film is showing near you

Thank you, Maek Darakananda

Narain’s dad, Maek, sent us an email with a quote from Bill Gates. The topic is making sure students don’t get lost in school, "the answer is not smaller classes but smaller high schools ... a school that has cohesiveness, when a kid walks down a hall and encounters an adult that adult will know their name ... and be able to talk to them about their progress."

Thank you, Maek, for recognizing the importance of a small community and nurturing environment and sharing the excerpt with us.

Habit of Mind: Responsible Risk Taking

We hope that students will learn how to take intellectual as well as physical risks. Students who are capable of being different, going against the grain of the common, thinking of new ideas and testing them with peers as well as teachers, are more likely to be successful.

Quote of the Week

“This nation was built by men who took risks - pioneers who were not afraid of the wilderness, business men who were not afraid of failure, scientists who were not afraid of the truth, thinkers who were not afraid of progress, dreamers who were not afraid of action.” ~Brooks Atkinson
